KITEBOARDING SONGKHLA

SONGKHLA WINDY SEASON DECEMBER TO APRIL

I recommend one be an intermediate level kiter and up.  In waves, able to relaunch kite, retrieve board, ride up wind confidently and perform self rescue techniques.

There is not a big kite scene, with only 10 other kiters in the area.  Rarely more than a few on the water!   With onshore to sideonshore winds it can be good riding from Nov to April. End of December, January, February, and March are the best winds.  November is rainy season so inconsistant,   April drops off fast, though we have put in 20 days some years.

Wind is usually in the 12 to 18 knot range and have lots of days 18 to 22. Most days, we can kite between 1pm to sunset around 7pm.

Keep an eye on a wind app for forecast. We use Windy. Songkhla on phone app is most easy to see the conditions in a glance. The report is from naval base by our beach.   They are generally quite accurate.

We have several locations, depending on wind direction   Some places can be have more shorebreak than others. The shorebreak gets bigger with tide in and 15kts of wind.

It is easy to start the day with a 3-7km downwinder from the south end of the beach.  Can ride the shore break or the swells outside of it.  Can take 15 minutes, or an hour or two playing along the way.

The waves are wind made and break as it shallows, with sandbars 50-100m offshore, usually 1 to 1.6 meter waves with some 2 meter on the outside on a good day. Not much down the line riding but still fun to ride. The south China Sea deepest part is only 80 meters deep, hence not a real swell on the east coast.  With downwind runs from some of these sweet spots, playing in small waves and open water with side onshore winds are awesome.

  • Safety is of utmost importance to all; gear working properly, self rescue techniques, general safe practices around launch site
  •        Usually we can kite from 1pm till 7pm.
  •        Variety of downwinders
  •         I cannot Guarantee wind …. but very few days not rideable

  •          We have great wind from Dec through March.  (At 60kg, we use our 9/10m 55% of days, 7m 35% and 12 10% of days)

For most, we recommend bring bigger kites 10 to 15 M+, a 12 being probably most useful if only one kite on tt.
